Glass replacement in Coatbridge

When double glazing mists up, it is the sealed unit that has failed, not the window. Damp air has found its way past the seal into the gap between the panes, and from then on the fog comes and goes with the weather but never clears for good. The Iron Burgh and its housing

Coatbridge grew on iron. By the 1850s it was known as the Iron Burgh, with dozens of blast furnaces round about, and the town’s housing still follows the shape that industry gave it.

The families who owned those works built the villas of Blairhill and Dunbeth, detached, semi detached and terraced houses in buff and red sandstone, many still with timber sash and case windows, and Drumpellier has more of the same stone. Then came the council. Cliftonville, Rosehall and Barrowfield went up between the wars, and Townhead, Kirkwood, Kirkshaws, Shawhead and Sikeside after 1945. Coatbridge’s tenements were built lower than Glasgow’s because of the mining under the town.

By the early eighties around eighty five per cent of the homes in Coatbridge belonged to the council. A great many have been bought since and re-windowed by their owners, which means a wide spread of window ages and makes across the same estates. On the edges, Glenboig gained estates from the national housebuilders in the early two thousands, so the units they were built with are now the age where seals start to fail, and new homes are going up at Shawhead and in the growth area planned around Gartcosh and Glenboig.

Blairhill and Dunbeth conservation area

Blairhill and Dunbeth, around Blair Street, Academy Street, Church Street and Dunbeth Avenue, has been a conservation area since 1979. North Lanarkshire Council’s guidance for it says the painted timber sash and case windows are part of its character and that uPVC can harm it, and replacing windows or doors there needs planning permission.

For houses there that already have double glazing, repair is the simple route. A new sealed unit or a new hinge leaves the house looking just as it did, and the question of permission never comes up. Our article on window rules in Scotland explains the wider rules.

New windows and doors in Coatbridge

Away from the conservation area, when frames are past saving we supply and fit new double glazing ourselves. Questions from Coatbridge

Can you change just the glass in our front door?

Yes. The door stays where it is and the glass unit comes out and goes back in as safety glass. If you like the design you have, we will match it where it is still made, and if you fancy a change, a new unit costs far less than a new door. If the whole door panel is tired rather than the glass, replacement door panels are another option.

Our house was bought from the council years ago and the windows are getting old. Repair or replace?
