    A new panel, not a whole new door

    Here’s something a lot of people don’t realise. If your front door’s looking tired, damaged or a bit dated, you very often don’t need a brand-new door. The frame, the part that’s fixed to your house, is usually perfectly sound. It’s the panel, the flat infill section in the middle, that’s taken the knocks or gone out of fashion. And that’s the bit we can swap on its own. It costs a fraction of a full replacement, there’s far less disruption, and once it’s in you’d never know it wasn’t the original.

    When a new panel makes sense

    A few of the common ones we get called out for: a panel that’s cracked or been booted in, one that’s faded and dated and dragging down the whole front of the house, or a plain panel that someone wants swapped for something with a bit of glass or a nicer design. Sometimes it’s about warmth, and an older panel gets changed for a better-insulated one. Whatever the reason, we’ll bring the options out to you, you pick the style and colour you like the look of, and we fit it into the frame you’ve already got.     Choosing a panel: style, colour and glass

    The panel is the flat infill inside the door frame, and it is what people actually see. Changing it changes the look of the whole front of the house. There are plain panels, moulded and beaded styles, half glazed and fully glazed options, and a wide range of colours and woodgrain foils. Glass can be plain, obscure, leaded, bevelled or with Georgian bars, and it can be toughened where the standards require it.

    If the panel is going in a door beside a busy pavement or where a child could run into it, we will steer you towards toughened or laminated glass. Toughened or laminated glass explains the difference and when each one is the right call.

    How we measure and fit

    Panels are made to measure, so the first visit is measuring the aperture, checking the beading and the frame condition and agreeing the style. The panel is then made up and we come back to fit it. The fitting itself is normally an hour or so, and the frame, hinges and locks all stay exactly where they are, which is why this costs so much less than a new door.

    If the frame or the hardware needs attention while we are there, we will price that separately rather than rolling it in. A dropped door is worth adjusting at the same time, and that is covered under our door service.

    When a new panel is the right answer

    A panel replacement makes sense when the frame is sound but the panel is not: a kicked in or cracked panel, water damage at the bottom edge, a delaminating foil, a colour you have never liked, or a plain panel you want glazed to get light into a dark hall. It is not the answer when the frame itself is bowed or the door has been forced badly enough to distort the reinforcement. We will tell you which one you have.

    Will a new panel match my existing frame?

    Yes. We measure the aperture and match the colour and finish of the frame, so the finished door looks like it was made that way rather than patched.

    Can I go from a solid panel to a glazed one?

    You can, and it is one of the most popular changes we do. It is also the cheapest way to get daylight into a dark hallway.

    How does the cost compare with a new door?

    A fraction of it. You are paying for the panel and the fitting, not for a new frame, new hinges, a new lock mechanism and the work of taking the old door out.

    My door has been damaged in a break in. Can you help?
